Champ d'Action was set up by the Antwerp composer Serge Verstockt in 1988 and at that time it was the first Flemish ensemble focusing entirely on contemporary music to receive an operating subsidy. The organisation fulfilled the need for the professional performance of contemporary music and also played a major pioneering role in the performance of the Flemish and international modern repertoire.
