This is a performance that is created once in a generation! A biography of the mother of performance art seen through the eyes of Robert Wilson. The theatre of this visionary American director is like a series of collages of dreams with a musical structure, an architectural arrangement of sounds, words, images and movements.
The production is an evocation of Marina Abramovic's life and artistic career, from her childhood in Serbia to her life as a performance artist. Playing opposite her is the star actor Willem Dafoe, a founding member of The Wooster Group and famous for his impressive film career. You will hear original and traditional music, sung live in the typical falsetto voice of Antony Hegarty (Antony & The Johnsons). 'Anthony brings a lyricism which, in conjunction with Bob Wilson and Marina Abramovic, makes this production a real opera,' says Gerard Mortier, director of the Madrid Opera, who was one of the initiators of this production.

It was originally designed by Leon Stynen (1899-1990). Since the building was inaugurated in 1968, it has had a number of major and minor enhancements. Over the last few decades Stéphane Beel (1955) has been responsible for several minor additions. As he clearly had a great understanding of and feeling for Leon Stynen's architectural idiom, he was the ideal candidate to design the 12,000 m² extension that was inaugurated in October 2010. Beel's design displays both independence and a deep respect for Stynen's architecture.
There is a guided tour of this impressive architectural achievement.
Our tip: after the tour pay a visit to our Grand Café. The Sunday brunch is an absolute must.

We will be concluding the season with two exceptionally beautiful stories. The one great and universal (already a classic!), another poetic and earthy. In 'Babel (words)' there are eighteen outstanding performers, supported by six talented musicians, a complex microcosm of languages and cultures. In 'Faun' the Greek mythological figure - half animal, half man - finds his female counterpart. An absolute gem!

With electric amplification and accompanied by drummer Richard Héry, the four think nothing of a virtuoso improvisation more or fewer. Equally undaunted, they cut loose with their own fine arrangements of 'Pulp Fiction' (Misirlou Twist) and Bruce Springsteen's 'Streets of Philadelphia', in which violist Mathieu Herzog treats us to his singing!
Film music, jazz or pop - no experiment whatever is avoided by these musical omnivores. In all this, notably, the ensemble never descends into gratuitous cross-over, but succeeds wonderfully in coupling classical brilliance with uninhibited playfulness. In a roller-coaster of startling musical twists and turns, 'The Other Ébène' is certain to have you gasping for breath.
If - in short - the familiar Ébène has already had you smiling, yearning and crying, then 'The Other Ébène' will bring you nothing less than ecstasy!

In 1817, the Swiss critic and publisher Hans-Georg Nägeli proclaimed Bach's 'Mass in B Minor' "the greatest work of music of all time and of all peoples", a remarkable statement at a time when Bach was known at most for his keyboard fugues - Mendelssohn's revival of the 'St. Matthew Passion' was still thirteen years in the future. It was nevertheless not just Nägeli and Mendelssohn who suspected that Bach's religious music could well contain hidden treasure: Joseph Haydn, in his old age, moved mountains to obtain a hand-written copy of the 'Mass in B Minor' - certainly no coincidence. Beethoven, too, gave particular credence to Nägeli's claim, taking it as a challenge to surpass Bach's mass with his own 'Missa Solemnis'.
Bach's 'Mass in B Minor' was not in fact completed in a single act of composition. The manuscript consists of four separate bundles, written between 1733 (the 'Kyrie' and the 'Gloria') and 1749 (the 'Credo'). The mass itself fulfils a dual role in Bach's oeuvre, rounding off his religious works and at the same time summarizing their essence.

Not only have these four musicians rocketed to a position among the world's best in the classical repertoire, but there also appears to be a revelatory jazz combo lurking within them. In the first of two successive concerts, the ebony foursome bestride three stayers in the quartet field.
"One cannot believe one's ears", said Maarten 't Hart about the 'unearthly' dissonance and 'audacious modulation' with which Mozart's epic Nineteenth Quartet begins. Whole theses have been written about the dark twenty-two-bar 'Adagio' preceding the point at which the 'Allegro' breaks through into a radiant C major.
'Rosamunde', for its part, is an eddying stream of brooding emotion. For three movements, Schubert wrestles through melancholy and despair, before celebrating a hard-won triumph in the final 'Allegro moderato'.
Tchaikovsky, lastly, exceeds all expectations with his melancholic 'Andante Cantabile', which reduced even the great Leo Tolstoy to tears.

A virtuoso of integrity, he combines a subtle interplay of tonal colours with structural clarity, qualities that make him one of today's finest Ravel interpreters. At the beginning of 2011 he brought out a magisterial double CD of Ravel's complete works for solo piano and you now have an opportunity to hear all of them live in deSingel, spread over two evenings. From the early works, which still lean towards Chabrier (Menuet Antique) and Liszt (Jeux d'eau), to atmospheric evocations 'à la Debussy' (Miroirs) and on to the innovative sounds of 'Valses nobles et sentimentales'. From Ravel's predilection for the grotesque (Gaspard de la Nuit) and the dance (La Valse) to his reverential nods to the French Baroque (Le Tombeau de Couperin). Plus a series of less familiar, but equally original, miniatures. A kaleidoscope of styles and colours, reflecting Ravel's utter dread of repeating himself. Steven Osborne convincingly demonstrates Ravel's ability continually to rediscover both himself and the piano.

Jan Lauwers - Needcompany - De kunst der vermakelijkheid

woensdag 23 mei 2012 - vrijdag 25 mei 2012
Theater - As a child of the seventies and radical innovator of the eighties, Jan Lauwers is always intensely involved in questioning the theatre as an art form. In his latest production 'The Art of Entertainment', and in collaboration with the Burgtheater in Vienna, he once again examines this medium. What is the status of theatre in a society that has in its deepest soul become a spectacle? In a world where reality and authenticity are presented as television formats? 'The Art of Entertainment' is a black comedy about a famous actor who decides to end his life. His memory, the seat of his soul and most important tool, is gradually fading. He is invited to participate in a very popular reality show, 'The Art of Entertainment'. In this cookery programme a renowned French cook will prepare the actor's last meal after which he will commit suicide. However, he becomes involved in a discussion with a number of colourful characters. What follows are the existential discussions of an intellectual class that has lost its way. Their conversation is regularly interrupted by moments of true slapstick. Lauwers gets the theatre machine turning at full speed. About to explode!

Jan Fabre - Troubleyn - GEANNULEERD! - Simon, gangster van de kunst

donderdag 17 mei 2012 - zaterdag 9 juni 2012
Theater - Troubleyn/Jan Fabre and Matthias Schoenaerts have by mutual consultation decided to postpone the creation of the production 'Simon, gangster of art'. Recent developments in Matthias Schoenaerts' international film career have forced him to revise his plans for the stage. A new production period starting in 2014 is being examined.

In 2008 Jan Fabre stepped into the shoes of the notorious French gangster Jacques Mesrine (1936-1979) for 'Art Kept me out of jail', his five-hour performance in the Louvre. Mathias Schoenaerts, seen recently as 'Rundskop', will now play a gangster in a new monologue which Jan Fabre has written specially for him. We see a mask that stretches and reaches high above the others. This gangster thinks he is invincible. He behaves as if he is the boss of all bosses, a 'capo di tutti i capi'. As is customary in the code of the Italian mafia, being 'a man of honour' is the highest aim. He balances between ecstasy and ruin. He constantly assumes a new identity and leads the life of a fugitive. The law and prohibition is written by him and with him and in him. The Code is inscribed on his body. Its constant violation stirs our imagination. We fall for his saintly aura and allow ourselves to be seduced by him. So after he has once again exposed himself to danger his punishment becomes our catharsis.

TEDx-Vlaanderen - De kracht van het verschil

maandag 21 mei 2012 - maandag 21 mei 2012
Kunstcampus -

Jonge makers denkers dromers . At the start of the century Caroline Lateur and Stefanie Everaert worked for Maarten Van Severen and in 2005 started their own firm. Their early work shows craftsmanship and a maximum spatial impact. In their conversions and custom-made furniture they combine tactility, experimentation and a surprising use of colour.
We asked the interior designers to design a local mosque in which a Muslim community of five hundred people could organise its daily social and religious life. The starting point is the nineteenth-century inner area of a medium-sized Flemish city. The challenge lies in creating a serene transition from the chaotic urban planning conditions to a place of ritual. At the same time this is a very complex interior assignment, since prayer, sermons and ritual washing, as well as cooking, eating, festivities, study and play are all part of the traditional use of a mosque. How can these cultural values be expressed in architecture and a universal, new microcosm be created?

His career illustrates not only his critical ideas, intellectual commitment and activism, but also his opposition to over-consumption and the hollow system of 'stardom' in architecture.

The exhibition consists of writing and models on the one hand and on the other a film that specifically examines architecture: 'No Stop City' (1968), the 'New Charter in Athens' (2010), … This material is surrounded by designs for various utility objects: 'Trees' (2011), 'Animali Domestici' (1985) etc. in which the innovative use of materials is combined with natural elements: tree trunks, water, etc. The various installations all share the same fundamental criticism: objects and architecture are not simply artefacts created by technology and consumer marketing, but must provide an answer to contemporary and real human needs. This thematic exhibition displays the relationship between new designs and what Branzi describes as anthropological themes such as history, nature, life, love, the sacred and death.

Radical Architecture . Objects and Territories'. It is a work in progress by architecture students at the Technical University of Delft.
In the mid-sixties, the intellectually fertile setting of the architecture school in Florence was the breeding ground for intellectually incisive Italian designers and critics who came together in Archizoom and Superstudio (both set up in 1966) and a series of other groups. It was in this highly-charged context that one has to view the critique by Archizoom and Andrea Branzi of market-oriented visual strategies, and also Branzi's proclamation of the 'right to resist a reality that is empty of meaning' and the need 'to act, to adapt, shape and destroy the immediate surroundings'.
'Radical Architecture' examines the architectural ideas and activism that arose in Italy in the sixties and seventies.
