But what happens when the building itself becomes the protagonist and thus the very reason for the film? '2½ dimensional: films featuring architecture' questions the status of the observer (the camera) and what is observed (the building) at the point where narration and visualisation meet. This exhibition shows films by a wide range of artists in which architecture not only plays a part, but itself becomes film as a result of explicit spatial explorations. In this way, the viewer suddenly becomes aware of the two-dimensional cinematic and three-dimensional architectural space: the 'two-and-a-half-dimensional overlap'!
Just as in previous group exhibitions at deSingel -- 'Another & another & another act of seeing urban space' (1997), 'Urban Dramas' (2003) and 'The Wrong House' (2007) - a range of artists here too examines the coexistence of artistic and architectural production. This time the focus is on the cinema. The architectural typologies range from a simple hut to a radiant icon, from a ruin to a utopian project.

His oeuvre consists largely of church and ceremonial music (Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, Funeral music for Queen Mary, and so on). He also applied himself to songs and even to opera (Dido and Aeneas). By blending the old Elizabethan choral tradition with French and above all Italian stylistic elements, he was able to lead English music to new heights. An achievement that resulted in his being given the title 'Orpheus Britannicus'. We are pleased to introduce you to this composer's exceptionally captivating oeuvre.

You will not only hear a number of new compositions, but will also read extracts from the works of the French writer George Perec that will projected onto the walls of the hall. Our Blue Hall, Ircam and Le Grand R in La-Roche-sur-Yon are the first venues for this experiment.
The works are all connected to the spatialisation of sound. In Fabien Levy's 'Souvenirs de Cantenac', four musicians stand at a distance from each other in our entrance hall. Thierry Blondeau, inspired by such Spectralists as Gérard Grisey and Michel Levinas, incorporates into his work the notions of moving and following a course. In 'Stratigraphie', here being performed for the first time, Oliver Schneller uses layers of sound in combination with instruments of several registers. In just a few years, Philippe Leroux's 'Voi(rex)' has become one of the masterpieces of French post-Spectralism. It starts out from the human voice and employs numerous electro-acoustic techniques. In between the works, excerpts from Pierre Jodlowski's 'Jours 54' enter into dialogue with the extracts from George Perec's novel '53 jours' projected on the walls.

The answer lies in this special series. For three weeks at a stretch you can enjoy three monologues he wrote for the actor Dirk Roofthooft. The main idea behind each monologue is Fabre's questioning of the artistic calling and the status of originality and authenticity associated with it. Plus one of the recurring themes in Fabre's work: metamorphosis. Thirteen years after the creation of 'The Emperor of Loss', Jan Fabre completed the circle with 'The Servant of Beauty'. Two reruns and a world premiere.

In 'The Emperor of Loss' there is a clown on stage who, like Tommy Cooper, tries harder and harder to demonstrate something original, even though he fails time and again. The clown - a metaphor for every artist - wants to forget everything except the strength to say 'no'. No to the world and its power structures, but also to the audience's expectations and established conventions.

Stefan Winter

Music is always a central component in the films and documentaries of Werner Herzog. In the Winter & Winter studios in Munich, Herzog became fascinated with music by the cellist Ernst Reijseger. Shortly afterwards, the soundtracks for the films 'The Wild Blue Yonder' and 'The White Diamond' appeared. The first is a fiction film about an imaginary planet. The second is a documentary about a flight engineer in Guyana. A hypnotic and therapeutic trancelike feeling of dancing dervishes detached from time and space is the result of a perfect symbiosis between director, musicians and film images, conveyed by an unexpectedly virtuoso synergy between jazz and world music.
The project is not only reliant upon the strength, agility and intelligence of a highly accomplished director and a consummate composer, however. There are also first-rate solo performances from Mola Sylla and a heavenly polyphonic choir from Sardinia. In short, a film concert with subtle and unique harmonies, twists and turns and 'plots' which descend upon you with a bearable lightness.

Will they get on the same wavelength?
She is experiencing intensely emotional Sapphic poetry, reminisces, talks about desire. He is at a turning point. His words are no more than scraps of memory strung together; he rewrites the past. Her language is narrative, like the memory of the ancient civilisation of the West. His language falters, it is the language of the memory of the modern age.
'An Index of Memories' is a scenic concert on memory and its emotions. It is all based on the writings left us by the ancient Greek poetess Sappho. Love, erotic desire and the hope it expresses are emotional memories of all ages. Annelies Van Parys had already set several of Sappho's poems to music. They form the starting point for a full-length composition in which past and present come into contact and complement each other. Caroline Petrick stretches the concept of the 'scenic concert' to the limit. Somewhere between scene and concert, space and the absence of it, and between index and memory, she seeks out a way in which music can be conceived.

Every year, David Moss, the artistic head of this special initiative, brings together a group of vocalists of various genres and styles in workshops, concerts, debates and talks. He takes an exploratory rather than a teaching approach and addresses everyone who is interested in the human voice. The unique nomadic approach means the project is on each occasion the result of a new partnership with a town or city and its cultural scene. The teachers for this thirteenth project (the second at deSingel) are Ida Kelarova, John Norris, Michael Lentz, Mola Sylla and Jocelyn Smith. The project has previously been hosted by several towns in Flanders, but also by Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Berlin and Marseille. In this closing concert you will hear eight selected participants from the course perform 'Century Songs', an exploratory and nocturnal finale for Ars Musica in Antwerp. This work was initiated by the composer Joachim Brackx, director Wouter Van Looy and vocalist David Moss.

Wibert Aerts

zaterdag 13 maart 2010 - zaterdag 13 maart 2010
Muziek - Ars Musica in Antwerpen -

Arditti Quartet

zaterdag 13 maart 2010 - zaterdag 13 maart 2010
Muziek - Ars Musica in Antwerpen - Do you know of a string quartet of world class that is more familiar with contemporary music than the Arditti? Probably not. That's why you've come across the Ardittis for more than twenty years with great regularity, whether it be on the deSingel podium or in each year's Ars Musica festival.
For this concert we asked Irvine Arditti to kick off with 'Ikhoor' by the Greek composer Yannis Xenakis, a grating and intuitively written string trio. It is quite simply a cornerstone of contemporary chamber music. According to Arditti, the Brazilian composer Felipe Lara is one of the best young composers of the moment. He mixes different musical languages into his own radically new syntax. The same applies to his recent Second String Quartet, which can be played with or without electronics. After the success of the first performance of the first quartet by the French spectralist Hugues Dufourt at the Musica festival in Strasbourg, Arditti were immediately prepared to give the first performance of another work of his. To end, the last quartet by the man who almost single-handedly set British music on the road to the avant-garde.

They seek new forms of expression and energies through improvisation. They study the body of the group (the chorus) and contrast it with the body of the individual.
Eric Thielemans is now conducting the group in one of its first concerts and at the same time will accompany them on unexpected percussion instruments. The key words in this short but powerful and adventurous performance are the playing of original music, and stage presence.

Her quick pirouettes and acrobatic dives are legendary, and her slim, androgynous appearance is always fascinating. She is an icon, a fifty-year-old blonde angel with an aura. The choreographer and performer Benoît Lachambre, who appeared with Meg Stuart in the successful 'Forgeries. Love and other matters', is her sparring partner on stage.
In 'Is you me', the two partners examine the relationship between image and dance to the live accompaniment of music by the composer Hahn Rowe and computer drawings by Laurent Goldring. In a pristine white landscape, the two dancers journey between 2D and 3D. They are anonymous, as their appearance is barely visible. Soon they are covered in scratches, drawings and colours projected from Goldring's computer and are gradually transformed into cartoon figures. Will these strange human bodies survive the technological tsunami rushing towards them?

The main theme of their concert is the religious music by Henry Purcell and his friend and mentor John Blow. Both composers wrote a large number of 'anthems', the Anglican Church's answer to the German protestant cantata, which is sometimes carefree and full of praise, and then reverts to an intense reflection on man's difficult struggle with his earthly existence.
The crown jewel in Purcell's religious art is none other than the 'Funeral Sentences for Queen Mary'. It is not only a heartrending reflection on human mortality, but also a highly personal account of the departure of Purcell's beloved sovereign. The fact that this music, seasoned with dissonance and uneasy harmonies, was heard at Purcell's own funeral scarcely a few months later makes it even more touching and special.

Their sublime sensitivity for the subtlest dynamic shading puts you on the edge of your seat. Fellow countryman, pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim has been a loyal fan for years, lending the famous 'Sergio Peresson' cello, which belonged to his late wife Jacqueline du Pré, to the cellist Kyril Zlotnikov.
The qualities of the cello are really shown off in Mozart's String Quartet in D, KV575. Although the public know this piece as the 'Prussian Quartet', sometimes it is also labelled as the 'cello quartet' with the cello taking a role that is virtually solo.
The Jewish composer Mark Kopytman also writes virtuoso cello parts. It comes as no surprise then that Kopytman's music is inspired by Jewish, Eastern-European folk music, with its typically slow, melancholic melodies. There is no worthier substitute for the human voice than the cello!

In 'The King of Plagiarism' a rather shy angel appears in the guise of a surgeon. This angel emulates 'the chattering monkeys' and would love to become an actor. He finds himself in a homemade laboratory. On stands we see beakers filled with brain-like objects happily bubbling away in a chemical solution. In a while he will provide himself with a brain. Tentatively and apologetically he addresses us. Who is this strange outsider who is so keen to become a person?

The critics have run out of superlatives to bestow on the brilliant German piano virtuoso Severin von Eckardstein. Since winning first place in the Queen Elizabeth competition in 2003, his career has soared. Here, he has chosen the perfect work with which to show-off his unrivalled pianist's qualities: Chopin's First Piano Concerto, where the piano is especially dazzling, in all its glory.
The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra is subsequently able to display its brilliant orchestral colours in Smetana's 'The Moldau' and in Stravinsky's 'The Firebird'. Smetana coloured his music so as to reflect the sound of the mightiest river in Bohemia. It is undoubtedly his best-known work. 'The Firebird' is a richly orchestrated piece of ballet music, 'on an extravagant scale' according to Stravinsky. Its instrumentation is quite simply brilliant.

Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen

zondag 21 maart 2010 - zondag 21 maart 2010
Verhuur -

Florilegium

woensdag 24 maart 2010 - woensdag 24 maart 2010
Muziek - Bach en Hoogdagen - The British ensemble Florilegium have whipped up quite a storm on the international baroque scene in only a few years, with striking, clear, lively performances. This is due to the consistent choice of using single instrumentation. Even in the Bach suites, repertoire that for decades has been the terrain of baroque orchestras, they have stuck to using one instrument per part.
One of their long-standing partners is the Dutch soprano Johannette Zomer, who herself is a Bach specialist. In this concert, she focuses her attention on the Bach solo cantatas, music that requires great personal commitment to Bach's religious perception in order to obtain a convincing result. Given her years of collaboration with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and her impressive stint as a Bach interpreter, this programme presents no problems for Johannette Zomer!

In October 1821, Mendelssohn the prodigy had spent 16 days as an apprentice with the great 'prince among poets' in Weimar. It was the proud composition teacher Zelter, a good friend of Goethe's, who had introduced him. At the age of twelve, Mendelssohn could already play Bach's complete 'Well-Tempered Clavier' by heart. Every afternoon, Goethe opened his Streicher piano with these aforementioned words and requested Mendelssohn to play his most cherished Bach fugues. It generated the beginning of a solid friendship between the old poet and the young composer. An encounter between two exceptional artists that captures our imagination. And this is the thread that runs through this special project with the Fauré Quartet and Warre Borgmans. Chamber music by the young Mendelssohn alternates with excerpts from letters that shed light on Mendelssohn's relationship with his teacher Zelter and especially with Goethe. It's as if you were with them! It's a real stroke of luck to finally hear this rarely played piano sextet live.

In 'The Servant of Beauty' he looks back at his past. To the time when, as a young man, he entered the service of his French-speaking master. When he was a puppeteer he dreamed of becoming completely invisible, even of disappearing completely, leaving only his puppets behind. As he holds forth, he philosophises at length about what beauty is and was and about his desire to achieve an 'ultimate state of being'.

For years he has been Brigitte Fassbänder's favourite pianist and with Thomas Hampson he forms an unrivalled dream team. To call Wolfram Rieger merely an accompanist would be a full-blown insult. He knows better than anyone how to turn words into music, evoke images and atmospheres and access the core of every song. For some considerable time now, Rieger has led the Lieder class at the renowned 'Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler' in Berlin. He monitors the new generation of Lieder interpreters closely. At our request and with a lot of enthusiasm, he has agreed to come to introduce outstanding song talent at deSingel every season.
Soprano Sylvia Schwartz kicks off the programme. She honed her skills with Thomas Quasthoff and Julia Varady and has already sung with Sir Colin Davis, Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim. At the moment she is under contract with the State Operas in both Vienna and Berlin. Just as in their Berlin Staatsopera programme, they will perform songs by Robert and Clara Schumann along with a selection from the Spanish repertoire. This programme was a tremendous success and now you can witness it in deSingel!

More raw, but also more beautiful than ever before. They mix up their usual team by engaging the percussionist David Kerman for the occasion. 'Voltage' is a raw work by Aranis' in-house composer Joris Vanvinckenroye. It promises to be powerful stuff. Shady melodies are interspersed with threatening rhythms, rough solos and compelling improvisation. Art Rock that makes you think of Univers Zero, but equally refers to the impact and energy of anything ranging from Kimmo Pohjonen to The Bad Plus. In between the new pieces, Aranis plays a Wim Henderickx score. Especially for the occasion, he has revised 'Variations', his first symphonic work from 1988. The young symphony musicians complete the programme with a selection from their own repertoire.

Workshop Les Ballets C de la B - Binnen/buiten en rondom

maandag 29 maart 2010 - vrijdag 2 april 2010
Kunstcampus - Quan Bui Ngoc has danced in productions by Alain Platel since 2002: Wolf (2003), vsprs (2006) and pitié! Central to the presentation format are four solo singers, who not only sing the arias, but also the choral parts, supplemented by two singers per voice. In combination with a strikingly sparse baroque orchestra, this results not only in additional transparency but also in a more direct and expressive approach. Herreweghe concentrates more than ever on an emotional, deeply human layer of meaning, which is interwoven with the notes of Bach's music. Judging from his most recent CD recordings, it seems as if Herreweghe has begun a second 'Bach youth'. During the concert, he tries out his new insights on the very best of Bach's music, the Matthew Passion. This masterpiece will undoubtedly sound stunning and greatly updated.

Belgische Kamerfilharmonie

vrijdag 2 april 2010 - vrijdag 2 april 2010
Kunstcampus -

Octopus Kamerkoor - Messiah

zaterdag 3 april 2010 - zaterdag 3 april 2010
Verhuur -

Brahms Happening

zaterdag 17 april 2010 - zaterdag 17 april 2010
Muziek - Brahms Happening - "Never make the mistake of doing the same thing for too long", declaimed Johannes Brahms. We have taken him up on his word and have completely changed the recipe for the composer happening. Whereas in the past a composer took centre stage for one day, this season we are devoting two days to a selection from the oeuvre of one of the very greatest.
The eleventh composer happening showcases performances of all Brahms' four symphonies by the deFilharmonie, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe. This is 'Brahms raised to the power of 4'. A retrospective format preceded by a superior selection from his chamber, song and piano collection. With classy performers such as Antje Weithaas, Silke Avenhaus and Quirine Viersen, and our home grown pride and joy, pianist Jozef De Beenhouwer. Plus the young soprano Caroline Melzer and pianist Anette Fischer-Lichdi, both of whom appear to be born for Brahms' songs. Once again, Antwerp Conservatory is also making a contribution, where we see some of Brahms' lighter side. DeSingel acts as the music society, and for the Viennese 'Gemütlichkeit' we are counting on you!

Bryars was a much-talked-about figurehead with his imaginative conceptual pieces, while Nyman was first and foremost a chronicler. His book 'Experimental Music: Cage and beyond' is today still regarded as a very worthwhile study of the spirit of those times.
The concert shows how, while both hailing from an experimental backwater, they took those initial steps into the style which some years later led to their success. Interestingly enough, this coincided with the integration of historical references: Nyman's 'Hypertonal Walzes', and the assimilation of Percy Grainger's harmonic progressions into Bryars' 'Hi-Tremolo', the dissection of a number by Bill Evans in 'My First Homage' and the equally unorthodox treatment of Webern in Nyman's 'Initial Treat/Secondary Treat'. The pièce de résistance of this concert is Bryars' 'The Sinking of the Titanic', which was initially written as a conceptual work, but rapidly grew into the prototype for Bryars' elegiac meditations. The hymns, morse code and underwater atmosphere bear the typical, uncompromising Champ d'Action sound.

Rote Fabrik - Platz Mangel (Belgische première)

donderdag 29 april 2010 - vrijdag 30 april 2010
Theater - 'Platz Mangel' is an exclusive health resort somewhere in the mountains. A group of over-sixties are staying here and spend their days dieting, listening to treatises on spirituality and studying medical insurance policies. Every now and then a cable car appears that brings them in or takes them away. Initially it all appears very sad, until you realize that this is a production by Christoph Marthaler. So there is nothing to be sad about, you will be like being here and will have plenty to laugh at.
In 'Platz Mangel', this Swiss director presents us with a masterly parody on the current wellness culture. As always he works magic with time, silence and music. 'Platz Mangel' is like a juke box that regularly emits the most diverse and heartbreaking songs - ranging from Schubert and Mahler to Brigitte Bardot and pop hits from the eighties. Between conversations on heart surgery and organ donorship, the patients sing as if their lives depend on it. This is Marthaler at his best: a gentle, melancholy reverie about life with top-class humour and music!

There is an astonishing collection of young, promising quartets who successfully endure those early difficult years and fight their way to the top. The Elias String Quartet is one of the most striking discoveries of the last few years. These four met each other in 1998 during their student days in Manchester, had lessons from the great and mighty and are seriously on target to win over the renowned international concert halls. On their mission to conquer, they will alight at deSingel for the first time, presenting a programme in which they can fully indulge.
To begin, they'll perform the Fifth of Mozart's six 'Haydn quartets'. The slow movement is one of those heavenly moments, something you only can get with Mozart: pure beauty of sound. In the last movement of Benjamin Britten's Second Quartet, he pays homage to Purcell in the form of a monumental chaconne. For the expansive Piano Quintet by Brahms, the Elias Quartet has found a dream partner in Jonathan Biss. This American wonder boy combines power and precision with chamber music sensitivity. A glittering coming together of top talent from the youngest generation, the sparks from which will surely set you ablaze.

The eye of the elephant is the ultimate moment when the aperture of the camera opens. Every photo made in that instant appeals to the imagination and stimulates the eye. For the last fifty years, Le Querrec's Leica has told us stories of imaginary world legends. Each legend becomes crystallised as an image and becomes ours. Le Querrec, the griot (poet), the storyteller, who projects the world onto an immense white screen. At the foot of the screen, an improvising dream quartet adopts Le Querrec's imaginary, delayed impression of time. In invocatory rhythmic and harmonic patterns, an uninterrupted tension is built up that continuously wrong-foots the listener with a series of surprising transitions. The Texier-Drouet tandem is the driving motor. The wind-players Scalvis and Portal surprise us with their virtuoso tempo variations and subtle nuances. The synergy that arises allows the carefully considered compositions to be performed with a lightness of touch. The music is interspersed with alienating, sometimes imaginary, effects. In the eye of the elephant there's a great deal to be read, regardless of which glasses you might be wearing.

Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen - Artifact

donderdag 6 mei 2010 - zaterdag 8 mei 2010
Dans - Following the success of 'Impressing the Czar', the Royal Ballet of Flanders is now presenting another amazing work by William Forsythe. 'Artifact' is a four-part ballet from 1984 and the start of a radical renewal of coded dance and the benchmark for a new type of ballet. A sort of dance that you can interpret as you like, as fantasy, critical questioning or purely as an interplay of forms.
'Artifact' comprises an array of material such as classical movement on ballet shoes in true Balanchine style, in highly structured formations. As well as free, flowing movements from American postmodern dance mixed with techniques used in contact improvisation. Group scenes, solos and pas de deux are danced in combination with spoken text. To the sound of Bach's 'Chaconne in D minor' a woman dressed in an historic costume invites the audience to 'Step inside'. A world full of golden magnificence unfolds, populated by a white ghost, a man with a megaphone and a corps de ballet. The imagination rules!

But for real piano fans the Brazilian Nelson Freire has long since ceased to be a secret. From the very beginning of his international career in the early 60s he established a cast iron reputation. This was based purely on merit. Due to his modesty, he distanced himself from the media and withdrew from every type of publicity. Alongside his solo career he acquired a particular reputation as the steady piano partner of his bosom friend Martha Argerich.
Nelson Freire plays with love and wisdom. His playing alternates between the lyrical, exalted, spiritual, explosive and dreamy. It always has a hypnotic intensity. He often opts for unusually quick tempos. Not to show-off, but simply because he is he able. He loses none of the clarity and detail, colour and phrasing. Sitting impassively, everything flows naturally, transferred through his strong fingers and supple wrist movements. Externally unmoved, but a fiery temperament within!

These words are enough to make you hanker to see these masters of the string quartet. Critics have run out of superlatives to praise their profound interpretations of Beethoven's string quartets.
"Art requires that we never remain motionless," said Beethoven. Words which the Takács Quartet take to heart. Even if they are familiar with these quartets, each performance is nevertheless slightly different. At every juncture, the Takács Quartet finds new angles and perspectives.
During the concert you will hear a quartet from each of Beethoven's three periods. Three unrivalled highlights illustrate the dazzling range of his mastery of composition.
