'Venus and Adonis' is the only opera the English Baroque composer John Blow set to music. He derived this short gem of simple narrative text from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', a meditation on love. The work, which is interlaced with dancing, choral passages and interludes, is constructed around the characters of Venus, Adonis and Cupid.
About thirty young singers and instrumentalists will be developing a unique version of Blow's 'Venus and Adonis' in an ultra-short rehearsal period The musical directing is in the hands of Nicolas Achten, assisted by the Polish baroque violinist Marcin Lacia. The Danshuis Station Zuid in Tilburg will be responsible for the scenic interpretation. This time it is not only singers and instrumentalists that will be involved; the Israeli choreographer Itamar Serussi will lead the stage rehearsals, in which several young dancers will also be participating.
'Venus and Adonis' is a very exciting project that offers young people the opportunity to work with professional artists and explore the boundaries of opera.
