When, after a gruelling quest in the jungle of the former Belgian Congo that is enough to drive one to insanity, Marlow finally arrives at his destination where he finds the deranged agent Kurtz at death's door. Kurtz painfully utters his final words: 'The horror! The horror!' Later, after returning to what is known as the civilized world, Marlow meets Kurtz' fiancée, who has spent years faithfully waiting for him. She wants to know what Kurtz's last words were. In an attempt to comfort her he replies 'your name'. 'Duister hart' is Guy Cassiers' theatrical adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness', a combination of two travel stories: a trip to the Congo and a trip to the dark abyss of the human soul. Following the acclaimed 'Under the Volcano', this production is the result of a new collaboration between Guy Cassiers and Josse De Pauw.
