Duquende (b. 1965), the stage name of Juan Rafael Cortés Santiago, is a Spanish flamenco singer long regarded as the successor to Camarón de la Isla. Indeed, he was only nine when Camarón invited him on stage to sing, taking the guitar himself to accompany the young boy. During his rich career, however, he has outgrown his status as successor to Camarón. For more than twenty years he worked on a circuit of small venues and in the so-called 'Penas', the flamenco clubs, where he developed his voice and his vocal technique. Thereafter, he became a permanent member of Tomatito ensemble and in 1997 replaced the brother of Paco de Lucía in Paco's sextet. This gave Duquende the opportunity to develop further during world tours. In 1996, he became the first flamenco singer to be invited to perform at the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. He has also worked with such artists as Manzanita, Juan Carmona, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Juan Habichuela, Moraíto Chico and Vicente Amigo.
For his concert in deSingel, he has gathered guitarist Juan Ramón Caro and percussionist David Dominguez around him.
