PLEASE NOTE! This concert has been cancelled.

In exotic mood, Christianne Stotijn and Oxalys entice and bewitch with this glittering programme of music for voice and chamber ensemble. These are songs by composers looking for new tonal idioms and finding inspiration in folk and naive primitivism - wholly in line with Picasso's penchant for African masks and Gauguin's love for unspoilt Tahiti. De Falla achieve exotic coloration by integrating lavish folk-dance rhythms. Ravel goes even further, using natural sounds and monotone melodies in his 'Chansons Madécasses' to create music primitive to the ear, but with a magical effect. Maurice Delage follows in the same path as his master and evokes strange sounds from the Far East in his 'Quatre Poèmes hindous'. A few decades earlier, Modest Mussorgsky had already conjured up unconventional sounds in his song cycle 'Detskaja' (The Nursery).
