Made in deSingel
About a year ago deSingel celebrated the opening of a major
12,000m² infrastructure expansion. Since then the extension has
been used with an intensity that exceeds our wildest expectations.
Just as Beel's building links up perfectly naturally with Stynen's
design, the use of the new spaces has also developed very
naturally. Consequently, production work by Belgian and
international artists can now at last take place on our expanded
arts campus, so that rehearsal periods in the new studios are able
to culminate in premiere in our main halls. From now on, all
performances, concerts and exhibitions made in house will be
grouped together in a category called 'Made in deSingel'. More
information on these production processes is available at
www.desingel.be, on our Facebook page and in special blogs.
What?
'Made in deSingel' is a collective term for all productions by
internationally renowned artists where the creative process takes
place partly or wholly in deSingel, and which have their Belgian or
world premiere in deSingel.
It is a new label that emphasises deSingel's role as a production
centre and respects the many national and international centres,
companies and artists that have been involved in the creative
process.
It facilitates the needs of makers so that they can focus on both
the content and the technical side of the creative process under
optimal conditions.
How?
Our policy is to support artistic projects that are directly
related to our programme. However, our support can be given in a
variety of ways. This depends on:
- the artist's
needs
We not only provide the place but also supervise the production,
support its technical realisation, take on the role of sounding
board, engage in dramaturgical dialogue, assist in distribution and
communication, etc. - the needs of the
discipline
Our support varies according to the discipline involved.
Architecture
As in the past, we accept our responsibility in the promotion of
architecture. The production of our exhibitions is wholly in the
hands of deSingel, though for two seasons this has been in
collaboration with the Flemish Architecture Institute.
Music
Both young musicians and renowned musical ensembles find we are
willing to lend an ear to their requests to work in our new
studios for a period of several days or weeks. This collaboration
ranges from regular rehearsal sessions for concert programmes to be
presented in deSingel and then on tour, to creation processes that
take place in consultation with the artists. These creations are
based on music but regularly explore the areas bordering on other
art forms such as visual art, installation, film, theatre and
performance.
Performing Arts
Production work by Belgian and international artists is carried
out in our new studios, which are thus indispensable. One condition
is that the creation process should result in Belgian or world
premieres in our halls.
One exception to this rule is that some Toneelhuis productions are
created in our studios before their premiere at the
Toneelhuis.
