After the about turn he made with 'nieuwZwart' (2009), in his latest creation, 'Monkey Sandwich', Wim Vandekeybus changes direction yet again. In his work, a blend of music, dance, theatre and film, the later medium plays a central role. A single performer on stage interacts with the fictional characters in the film like a sort of spin doctor of life. To a certain extent it is back to the roots for this choreographer, who started his career as a photographer. In film, his aim is to contrast the anecdotal nature of what is happening on stage with something that is part of the timeless and imaginary. The evolution in Vandekeybus' work follows the line of his investigation into new possibilities for the body. How does the body change in a certain context? How do you perform if your only partners on stage are on the silver screen? 'Monkey Sandwich' is inspired by unforeseen events, unexpected turns and a fragmentary narrative structure. A reference to urban legends is not far off and, as in this monkey sandwich story, the truth it contains often dissolves into fantasy.
