Jozef Wouters initially studied theatre, but it soon became clear that his interest lay mainly in the spatial dimension and stage design. Consequently, and on the basis of this conclusion, over the past few years this young artist has been developing his own individual career, in which he generally abandons the theatre and places architectural structures in the public space. Wouters' main interest is in the interaction between form and function. Or more specifically, how building a certain structure can generate meaning and give the place significance. Apart from form and beauty, he focuses attention on the absurdity or the seriousness, the social charge or indeed the lightness of a building. Wouters will be placing an installation in the arts campus garden in the form of a football stadium that will shed a new light on deSingel. Or will it be the other way around? 'STADIUM / STADIUM # 5' will be the fifth stadium Joseph Waters has built. Numbers one to four were constructed on the site of the Antwerp Scheld'apen, the Oude Graanmarkt in Brussels and as a stage set for Meg Stuart. What can one expect from 'STADIUM / STADIUM # 5'? The answer is simple: a place to play football! But also an installation that represents confrontation, integration, space, beauty and fantasy.
