Do you remember Christian Lindberg's spectacular last tour in 2010? A flamboyant trombonist, conductor and composer, he is for many the best trombonist ever, besides being highly regarded internationally for his conducting and composing; indeed, he already has more than three hundred compositions for his instrument to his name. 'Kundraan and The Arctic Light' is thus awaited with eager anticipation.
Lindberg's contemporary works are harnessed to two works by his Swedish fellow-countryman, Wilhelm Steinhammar (1871-1927), who studied in Berlin and was a great admirer of Germany's music culture. The overture 'Excelsior' is exuberant and rousing, an ideal curtain-raiser for this evening with an equally boisterous Lindberg. According to many, Steinhammar's 'Serenade' is his boldest and best work for orchestra, besides being regarded as the absolute masterpiece of the Swedish symphonic repertoire.
