Postgraduate School of Performing Arts (POPOK), Postgraduate Course in Stage Design

Popok

Stage design has become an important artistic component in the modern performing arts. POPOK provides young and up-and-coming designers with insight into this field and stimulates research into new forms. The course has existed for more than ten years and has produced a new generation of stage designers who occupy a prominent place on the theatre scene. The course works in close association with deSingel, where it is also housed. Under the supervision of such prominent stage designers as Johan Daenen, Niek Kortekaas and Benoît Dugardyn, students generate design projects for theatre and opera that are closely linked to actual theatre practice. Students are selected by a test on their theatrical knowledge, talent and motivation.

APT (Advanced Performance Training) is a full-time training course for artists and theorists in all disciplines in which reflection on performance plays a central role. Over a period of three months the participants develop their own research and, in consultation with APT mentors, put together a relevant programme of workshops, lectures, discussions and presentations. APT acts as a think-tank for makers and thinkers, a sheltered haven where, in a critical environment, research is confronted with a range of perspectives and basic principles. APT regularly opens its doors to a broader public.

Sabbattini Employment Initiative

logo Sabbatini

DeSingel offers a workspace and facilities for two training courses that are part of the 'Sabbattini project', an employment initiative for the cultural sector named after Nicola Sabbattini (°1574, Italy), one of the founders of modern theatre mechanics. The 'assistant stage technician' course trains fifteen people each year and is about to enter its seventh year. The 'production assistant' course, which started in 2006, can accommodate twelve people. These training courses are supported by the VDAB (Flemish Department of Employment), the city of Antwerp employment unit and the Social Fund for the Performing Arts. DeSingel receives support from the Province of Antwerp to develop this initiative even further.
