The German accompanist Wolfram Rieger had been on our wish list for ages. For years he has been Brigitte Fassbänder's favourite pianist and with Thomas Hampson he forms an unrivalled dream team. To call Wolfram Rieger merely an accompanist would be a full-blown insult. He knows better than anyone how to turn words into music, evoke images and atmospheres and access the core of every song. For some considerable time now, Rieger has led the Lieder class at the renowned 'Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler' in Berlin. He monitors the new generation of Lieder interpreters closely. At our request and with a lot of enthusiasm, he has agreed to come to introduce outstanding song talent at deSingel every season.
Soprano Sylvia Schwartz kicks off the programme. She honed her skills with Thomas Quasthoff and Julia Varady and has already sung with Sir Colin Davis, Claudio Abbado and Daniel Barenboim. At the moment she is under contract with the State Operas in both Vienna and Berlin. Just as in their Berlin Staatsopera programme, they will perform songs by Robert and Clara Schumann along with a selection from the Spanish repertoire. This programme was a tremendous success and now you can witness it in deSingel!
